After an extensive global search including interviews in the UK and Asia, Shrewsbury International Asia is delighted to announce the appointment of Dr Tim Nuttall as Group Director of Schools from June 2020. He will succeed Mr Stephen Holroyd who, after 12 years of service as Principal of Shrewsbury International School (Riverside) and a further 3 years as Chief Executive Officer and Director of Schools for Shrewsbury International Asia (SIA), is returning to the UK. Working closely with Shrewsbury International Asia’s Principals, Dr Nuttall will oversee the development of the existing schools in Bangkok and Hong Kong - and the new schools in China.

Tim Nuttall is currently the Rector and Executive Head of St Stithians College in Johannesburg – one of South Africa’s top independent schools. Prior to assuming the leadership of St Stithians seven years ago, his 30-year career in South Africa has spanned tertiary and secondary education – as an Associate Professor of History at the University of Natal, a Deputy Head at St Andrew’s College and Head of Somerset College. He has been actively committed to advancing education in South Africa’s new democracy. St Stithians is affiliated to international schooling organisations and through these Dr Nuttall has created global professional networks and developed internationalist perspectives. After attending school and university in South Africa, he was awarded a Rhodes Scholarship to study at the University of Oxford in the United Kingdom. He graduated from Oxford with an MA in Philosophy, Politics and Economics (PPE) and a doctorate in Modern History.

Tim Nuttall is married to Margaret Shaw, who has worked in various roles as a research librarian and consultant in South Africa. They have two children, Joshua who runs a digital marketing consultancy in Johannesburg, and Lalage who is a student at the University of Cape Town.

Sir David Lees, Chairman of the Shrewsbury International Asia Advisory Board, would like to take this opportunity to thank Mr Keith Clark from RSAcademics who led the search - and all involved in the rigorous selection process.

Dr Tim Nuttall writes:

'I am honoured to have been appointed as the new Director of Schools. I will build on the excellent platform created by Mr Stephen Holroyd, the existing Director, and the SIA Board. I embrace the opportunity to grow and expand the three schools already in existence in Bangkok and Hong Kong, and to lead the team which will open three pioneering schools in mainland China. I will bring to this role my considerable and diverse experiences of implementing strategy and leading schools which are fulfilled communities and centres of excellence and significance. The vision for the Shrewsbury International Asia schools is that they are rooted in their local context while offering international and global educational opportunities. The dynamic and exciting context of schooling in East Asia connects with Shrewsbury School in the United Kingdom to advance a project with powerful global impact. '

 Mr Stephen Holroyd writes:

“I am delighted that Shrewsbury International Asia has appointed Dr Tim Nuttall as its new Director of Schools.  He clearly has the academic track record, the passion for education in Asia and the demonstrable affinity with the highest of standards to make a real success of this position. It has been a pleasure to become acquainted with Tim and his wife Margie over the last several months - and everyone who has met him has been energised by his professionalism, intellect, vision and drive.”

Sir David Lees writes:

“Dr Tim Nuttall has been appointed Director of Schools of Shrewsbury International Asia (SIA) and takes up this appointment on 1st June, 2020.

Dr Nuttall succeeds Mr. Stephen Holroyd after 17 years as a Teacher, House Master and Second Master at Shrewsbury School in the UK and a further 15 years with Shrewsbury in Asia firstly as Principal of the Riverside Campus from 2005 and then since 2017 as Director of Schools. In his different roles Stephen has made an enormous contribution to the development of SIA and its growing group of International Schools in Asia.

Dr Nuttall arrives from South Africa at a pivotal time in the development of SIA.  He will be ultimately responsible for the growth and development of SIA’s three established Schools in Bangkok, now in Bangkok (two) and Hong Kong and the three new Schools in China which we plan to open in Huangpu (Guangzhou), Jiading (Shanghai) and Nansha (Guangzhou).  All six Schools are the subject of licence agreements with Shrewsbury School in the UK.

Dr Nuttall has had a lengthy career as an educationalist in the UK and South Africa which has spanned the worlds of universities, independent schools and consultancy.  His current appointment, which he has held for the last seven years, is as Rector and Executive Head of St. Stithians College, Johannesburg one of South Africa’s leading independent educational establishments.  As Rector, he has executive responsibility for a College of seven schools each headed up by a Principal and comprising, in total, 3,600 students.

Dr Nuttall will report directly to Mr. Chali Sophonpanich, the lead investor behind SIA, and on behalf of the Advisory Board of SIA I welcome him to his new role.”
